According to Wisevoter, Mississippi takes the top spot for highest poverty with 18.7%, followed by Louisiana at 17.8%, New Mexico at 16.8% and West Virginia at 15.8%.
Debt.org also lists the states with the highest poverty rates as: New Mexico (18.2%), Mississippi (17.8%), Louisiana (16.9%), Arkansas (15.9%), Kentucky (15.8%), Oklahoma (15.8%), West Virginia (15.6%), Alabama (14.8%), Texas (13.7%), and a tie between North Carolina and South Carolina (13.3%).
The NIH notes the highest rates are in Mississippi (14.3%), Louisiana (14.2%), New Mexico (13.7%), and West Virginia (11.9%).
